Samsung Electro-Mechanics has announced a major investment of $1.2 billion in its Vietnam manufacturing subsidiary, marking a significant strategic shift toward high value AI semiconductor components. The company has already received an investment registration certificate from Vietnam's Foreign Investment Agency for AI Flip-Chip Ball Grid Array (FC-BGA) production.

FC-BGA substrates are a critical component in the AI semiconductor ecosystem. These high-density package substrates connect chips to main circuit boards, delivering improvements in performance, integration density, and thermal management, capabilities in high demand across AI servers, data centers, robotics, and autonomous vehicle platforms.

With this latest commitment, Samsung Electro-Mechanics will have accumulated approximately $2.2 billion worth of FC-BGA production facilities in Vietnam alone, following an earlier $850 million plant established in 2021. The scale of the new investment mirrors the company's initial $1.2 billion entry into Vietnam back in 2013, when it first set up camera modules and PCB factories, a signal of how significantly the strategic focus has shifted from consumer electronics toward AI infrastructure components.

Vietnam's Growing Role in the Global AI Semiconductor Supply Chain

Vietnam began producing FC-BGA at the Samsung Electro-Mechanics facility in 2024, and this new investment is expected to substantially scale that capacity. Analysts view the move as an effort to close the gap with Japanese and Taiwanese incumbents, including Ibiden, Shinko Electric, and Unimicron, who currently hold over 70% of the global FC-BGA market share.

Industry analyst Park Kang-ho of Daishin Securities projects that the large-scale expansion could position Samsung Electro-Mechanics as a top global player in the segment, noting that "a structural shortage in FC-BGA for AI servers and data centers is set to continue" throughout 2026.

This investment reflects a broader trend of global technology leaders deepening their manufacturing commitments in Vietnam, particularly in high value semiconductor components. For Vietnam, the expansion signals a maturing role in the global technology supply chain, moving beyond assembly and consumer electronics into advanced AI hardware components. As AI demand for high performance computing infrastructure continues to accelerate, Vietnam's position as a manufacturing hub for critical semiconductor substrates is set to grow in strategic importance.
